Nidwalden gets first 1,000 fiber optic connections

Stans, 23 April 2026

Stans/Buochs - The first active connections in the Swiss canton of Nidwalden’s fiber optic network have been completed and are now available for sale. Stans and Buochs each have 500 connections. Investors in the new network include project developer Cantonal Electricity Works Nidwalden, as well as Swiss FibreCo and Swisscom.

The first 500 customers in Stans and the same number in Buochs can now benefit from a connection to the new Nidwalden fiber optic network. The project developer, the Cantonal Electricity Works Nidwalden (EWN), announced in a statement, that they will gradually expand the network over the coming years. Alongside EWN, Swiss Fibre Net – through its subsidiary Swiss FibreCo (SFC), which specializes in fiber optic expansion – and Swisscom are investing in the new network. Initially, Salt and Sunrise will offer their services on this open network, followed by all major telecommunications companies.

“With the expansion of the fiber optic network, we are taking an important step toward the future,” EWN Director Remo Infanger is quoted as saying. “In SFC, we have found a good partner who is contributing to the significant investment.” The company says its own subsidiary KFN is intended to complete the offering with its Quickline products.

“With the first connections now completed and ready for use in Nidwalden, we are writing the next important chapter in our company’s history,” added SFN CEO Andreas Waber. “It’s not just Switzerland’s urban centers that will benefit from fast fiber optic connections, but also the residents of the beautiful canton of Nidwalden. Together with EWN, we are making this possible.” The long-term goal, according to Waber, is to achieve almost complete coverage throughout Switzerland. “This would benefit the whole of Switzerland.” ce/mm
