In Nidwalden, people reside and live where others go on holiday. Around 40 kilometres of lakeside shoreline on Lake Lucerne ensure a high quality of life with a wide range of sports and leisure activities whatever the season. The canton offers 270 hiking routes on a 600-kilometre network of footpaths and boasts the highest density of aerial cableways in Switzerland – and probably the world. The most spectacular of these is the CabriO cableway to the Stanserhorn, with a unique construction that offers a view of the original Swiss cantons without masts or ropes.
Unique experiences in nature
Lake Lucerne and the mountains offer a wide range of leisure and excursion activities in summer and winter. The view from the Stanserhorn, at an altitude of 1,898 metres, extends over 100 kilometres of the Alps, including the world-famous trio of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau, as well as ten Swiss lakes. The circular trail on the summit of the Stanserhorn offers a 360-degree panoramic view of Central Switzerland and the French Vosges Mountains.
Travel like through a Märklin model rail road landscape
The canton of Nidwalden not only has its own airport in Buochs, but is also well timed for day-to-day travel by rail and boat and conveniently connected to the public transport network for tourists. The Zentralbahn zb is appreciated by commuters as well as by day-trippers and railway fans from all over the world, who are fascinated by the railway tracks through fields, forests and meadows and along the shores of the lake.
Living in Nidwalden
The capital city of Stans and the other ten municipalities of Nidwalden offer attractive residential areas close to nature, with shopping facilities ranging from malls to the weekly market and numerous farm shops where local producers sell their products. The range of educational, cultural and medical facilities available in the small, rural canton also stands up to comparisons with the large, urban ones.
