Stans/Buochs - The utility company EWN is planning the construction of a large battery storage facility at the Fadenbrücke substation in Buochs. The storage facility is intended to ensure grid stability for electricity sourced from decentralized photovoltaic systems.
The utility company Elektrizitätswerk Nidwalden (EWN) has drawn up plans for the construction of a large-scale battery storage facility in Buochs in the canton of Nidwalden, Switzerland. A corresponding building application has been lodged with the relevant authorities, according to a press release. The facility is intended to store electricity generated from decentralized photovoltaic systems, which is not required for use in the grid at present.
The storage system uses lithium iron phosphate battery technology - a proven and mature technology, according to the company. “By leveraging this highly flexible and reliable storage technology, EWN is playing a significant part in efforts to integrate renewable energy into the Nidwalden grid, thereby helping to safeguard supply security”, comments Remo Infanger, Director of EWN, in the press release.
The battery storage facility is expected to be able to store up to 34 megawatt hours of electrical energy and feed it into the grid as required. Construction activities are scheduled to begin in 2026, with commissioning then planned for 2027. The project is being realized in collaboration with local partners. As Remo Infanger underlines, these plans come as part of EWN’s strategy for sustainable energy solutions. ce/ww
